The first small 16-valve GTI, the Clio 16S, introduced in 1990, took up the 1800cc 140 horsepower F7P type engine from the 19 16S. Less lively than the Peugeot 205 GTI, the Clio 16S, however, had better handling on the road with regard to driving precision and traction out of corners. The 16S remained in production until 1994, when it took the name 16V.
