If the third generation of the Golf GTI, presented in 1992, initially sacrificed pure sportiness to comfort, it was joined in 1993 by the GTI 16v, whose 150 horsepower renewed the tradition and temperament of the previous version. But the highlight of the range was represented by the VR6, with a 174 horsepower 2792cc engine (the Syncro had the 190 horsepower 2863cc instead). Some special series were produced from the base GTI and GTI 16v: Edition (July 1996) and Anniversary (1996). The third series GTI went out of production in 1998.
