Starting from the Ferrari 412P chassis 0844 of the NART team, Luigi Chinetti had the idea, at the end of 1967, to create a CanAm car. The car was sent to Maranello for the necessary modifications from Group 6 to Group 7. The bodywork was transformed into a spyder; the engine, still 4 liters, gave about 420 horsepower at 8000 rpm. Although modified, the car could not have its say against cars expressly conceived for the CanAm regulation, where the most competitive competitors could count on 500hp engines on a total weight not exceeding 700kg. The results, with Ludovico Scarfiotti at the wheel, were obviously rather modest. However, Chinetti's idea was taken up again that same year by Ferrari, which along the lines of 0844 transformed two 330 P4 chassis, the 0858 and the 0860, into Group 7.
