For many years, the Camel Trophy was one of the most difficult and exciting challenges in world motorsport. Starting in 1982, the Trophy involved crews from different countries with Land Rovers and Range Rovers. In 1990 the Land Rover Discovery was used, which remained until 1997. The 1996 edition was held in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo. The model used was the Discovery 300tdi, which had replaced the 200tdi starting from the 1994 edition. In 1996 it was the Greek crew made up of Miltos Farmakis and Nikos Sotirchos who won the classification.
