In March 1970, at the Geneva Motor Show, Bertone presented the Garmisch prototype based on the BMW 2002 ti. Like the BMW Spicup presented the previous year, this project, marked with the initials E19, was commissioned directly by BMW. Designed by Marcello Gandini, the car aroused mixed reactions but some of its lines already foreshadowed the future 5 E12 series.
