With its new 6-cylinder models, BMW renewed the high-end car segment. After collaborating with Bertone in the early 1960s for the construction of the 3200CS coupé, BMW commissioned him a prototype based on the 2800 sedan. The BMW 2800 Spicup (contraction of the terms spider and coupé) was presented at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show. Designed by Marcello Gandini, this car featured several innovations with a Targa-type roof that opened in two parts. Presented again in Frankfurt in September 1969, the Spicup did not convince the public and was used as a road car by the owner, who drove 100,000km there. Not bad for a concept car! The Spicup was restored around 2008-2009 and exhibited at the Concorso di Eleganza at Villa d’Este in 2009 and at the BMW Museum during the summer of 2010.
