For 1973 Alfa Romeo prepared a Group 2 version of the new Alfetta sedan, also given that the GTAm was beginning to show signs of old age. The chassis was revised and the body was enlarged to accommodate larger rims. The 1800 twin-shaft engine was replaced by a 1990cc unit derived from that of the GTAm with a four-valve cylinder head and a power of almost 260 horsepower. The car had some races on the track but although faster than the GTAm it was not able to undermine BMW and Ford, also due to limited reliability. The Alfetta Gr.2 was also seen in some rallies but the entire project was shelved because Autodelta decided to continue to focus on the sport program with the 33 and on the GTV that was about to obtain the racing homologation.
