Based on the positive experiences of the Tipo 60, engineer Alfieri designed a development capable of accommodating the three-liter engine instead of the two-liter. Thus was born the Tipo 61, which kept the avant-garde chassis of the Tipo 60 (Birdcage) and which was equipped with a 2890cc in-line 4 cylinder that gave 250 horsepower at 6800 rpm. All 17 units built between October 1959 and February 1961 had American drivers or a team, the Camoradi, as their first owners, which in the early sixties won a prestigious place in sports racing. The most important victories were obtained in the World Sport Championship, at the Nurburgring 1000km in 1960 with Moss / Gurney) and in 1961 with Gregory / Casner. Some chassis were later equipped with Ferrari, Ford and Buick engines. the victories achieved by the Tipo 61.
