The 144 model made a decisive contribution to establishing Volvo's image worldwide. Extremely robust and safe, the 144 was introduced in 1966 with a 1778cc 4-cylinder engine. But the real success came with the next series (1985cc 4-cylinder engine in production since 1968). Options available include an automatic gearbox and self-locking differentials. The 144 went out of production in 1974.
