С учётом НДС €259.95 Designed for the 1979 F1 season, the Tyrrell 009 was heavily inspired by the 1978 world champion Lotus 79. After the 1978 008, which was still a conventional car, the 009 adopted ground effect. Equipped with the Ford Cosworth V8, the Tyrrell 009 looked quite competitive at the start of the season, but the results were on average levels, with no particular exploits. Four third places and other placements in the points allowed Ken Tyrrell's team to confirm their fifth place in the constructors' standings. The 009 was driven by Derek Daly, Jean-Pierre Jarier, Geoff Lees and Didier Pironi.
In his second year with Tyrrell in 1979, Didier Pironi achieved some good results behind the wheel of the 009. At the US GP West in Long Beach, Pironi qualified in 17th place and was disqualified in the race for being pushed after a spin. He fared better at the next GP, in Jarama, where he finished in sixth place.
