The third series of the Maserati Quattroporte was presented in 1977. The design of the bodywork was this time entrusted to Italdesign. The car was essentially a long wheelbase Kyalami and the engine was also derived from that model. As on the Kyalami, the Citroen components had completely disappeared. The Quattroporte was available in 4.1 and 4.9 liter displacements (the latter became the only one available from 1985). In 1987 the car was called “Royale”, to underline the level of finish, which had been further improved.
