Launched in March 1984, the second series of the Golf GTI initially suffered from much tougher competition than in the past. At the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, VW relaunched with the 16-valve GTI, with an output of 139 horsepower, distributed mainly at high revs, which again made the Gti a competitive car. In July 1989 a restyling was carried out and in April 1990 the compressor G60 was presented. Numerous special series were produced over the years: GTI Cup (September 1987), GTI 16S (May 1988), GTI Edition One (December 1989). These last two are, together with the first series, the most sought after by collectors. The second series Golf GTI went out of production in 1992.
