With the Jetta, Volkswagen offered a notchback version of the Golf. In 1980 the car was equipped with the Golf GTI engine, but the Jetta's vocation was less sporting: it is therefore difficult to give it the GTI acronym. A compromise was therefore found and the “sporty” Jetta was christened GLI. The engine was the 1600cc with 100HP, then the 1800cc with 112HP starting from 1983, following the evolution of the Golf GTI. Performance was close to that of the Golf. The second generation Jetta arrived in 1984 and the GLI name was changed to GT. The Jetta also received the 1.8 16-valve engine from the Golf GTI and will be called GTX 16v from 1987.
