After two disappointing seasons, Leyton House Racing (ex-March) signed a five-year contract to use Ilmor Engineering engines. Team owner Akira Akagi confirmed Ivan Capelli and Mauricio Gugelmin. The new CG911 designed by Chris Murphy was a fairly simple car but suffered from a lack of reliability throughout the season. The technical problems were added to the administrative and management ones with the arrest of Akagi in September 1991. The team collected only one point thanks to the sixth place of Capelli in Hungary; Capelli was replaced by Wendlinger in the last GP of the season.
