Derrick White was put in charge of the Cooper F1 project for 1967, with John Cooper busy as a designer in other categories. A lighter T81B was ready for the Monte Carlo GP, and the new T86 made its debut at the British GP at Silverstone. The magnesium-elektron monocoque of the T86 was 50kg lighter but the Maserati V12 engine remained too heavy and not powerful enough. With the T86, Jochen Rindt competed in two GPs (England and Germany), retiring; Ickx raced with the T86 at the US GP, without finishing the race.
