The already very competitive 1986 Williams FW11 underwent development for the 1987 Formula 1 season. Called the FW11B, it had been improved in aerodynamics, cooling systems and the Honda V6 engine was even more efficient and powerful. An intelligent suspension system was also developed over the course of the season and was first used in Monza. In 1987 Williams dominated the scene, winning the drivers 'championship with Nelson Piquet and the constructors' world championship.
