In 1988 Victor Gauntlett decided to invest in a sports program through the Proteus Technology (Protech) company. Ecurie Ecosse was commissioned to develop and manage the design of an Aston Martin sports prototype under the sporting direction of Ray Mallock and the technical direction of Max Boxstrom. The chassis was built by Courtaulds and the engine (6000cc, 650hp V8) was prepared by Callaway. Five AMR1 chassis were built in 1989. Faced with fierce competition from Sauber-Mercedes, Jaguar, Porsche and Nissan, the Aston Martin AMR1s struggled a lot and the best result of the season was a sixth place at Brands Hatch with David Leslie and Brian Redman. The program was shelved at the end of 1989.
