The 909 was an experimental car conceived by Porsche exclusively for hill races. In the only two races in which he participated in 1968, the 909 was equipped with the 2000cc and 8-cylinder type 771 engine. Short of development, the 909 however served as a laboratory car to experiment with some solutions that would be seen on the 908/3 of 1970.
