The Ferrari-Lancia D50 that brought Ferrari the F1 1956 world championship with Juan-Manuel Fangio was deeply modified for the 1957 season, both in mechanics, in the chassis and in the bodywork. The changes were so radical that the car took on a new name, 801 (8 for the cylinders and 1 for the F1 category). The 801, however, did not prove to be very competitive, and Hawthorn, Musso and Collins had to settle for some placement in a season dominated again by Fangio, who however switched to Maserati.
