Thanks to successive evolutionary stages, the V6 engine that had equipped the first Dino 156 F.2 in 1957 was brought up to 2.4 liters and was mounted on the single-seater that competed in the 1958 F1 championship, the 246. In the meantime , the F1 landscape was rapidly evolving, with the arrival of British manufacturers such as the Vanwall or the Cooper, which already had the Climax rear engine. Although the 246 was a conceptually outdated car, Mike Hawthorn took the world title, with just one victory, at the French GP. However, Ferrari's return to the top was marred by a series of mourning that deprived the Scuderia of Luigi Musso and Peter Collins. Hawthorn himself, world champion, died in a car accident at the wheel of his Jaguar on January 22, 1959.
