In 1978 Ford and the Zakspeed decided to prepare a Group 5 Silhouette version of the Capri. The car made its debut at the end of the season in the DRM (Deutsche Rennsportmeisterschaft) and proved to have considerable potential. Enrolled in Division II (displacements up to 2000cc), the Ford Capri Zakspeed found a valid rival in the BMW 320. The Capri was equipped with a 1400 turbocharged engine, which in a fairly short period gradually went from 380 to 450 horsepower and beyond. In 1980 a version with a 1700cc turbo engine was also prepared for the I division, dominated at the time by the Porsche 935 Turbo in various configurations. In the meantime, the Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo of the GS team had also joined the 1st division. Those years were highly spectacular for the DRM, with beautiful and hard-fought races. The Capri Turbo competed until 1982.
