Presented in 1986, the Z1 was a roadster wanted by BMW to create a stretch of continuity between the tradition of pure spyders and the future of the automotive (the abbreviation Z stood for Zukunft which in German means future). The production was deliberately very limited. The Z1 was characterized by unusual technical choices, such as completely removable doors. Another spyder in BMW production would reappear only in 1995, when the Bavarian company presented the Z3, intended for a larger production than the limited edition of the Z1.
