After the experience with the MS630/650 (basically the open version of the MS630), Matra dedicated itself to the construction of the MS650, with an improved tubular frame and suspensions similar to those used on the Formula 1 MS80. A first prototype underwent a accident with Servoz-Gavin at Marigny, when a suspension element failed. Two MS650s were hastily prepared for the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Beltoise and Courage achieved fourth place in a car with the distinctive long tail.
