With a different and more modern body, the BMW M3 E46 series was introduced in 2001. The last M3 to accommodate an atmospheric in-line 6-cylinder engine, the M3 E46 was capable of giving Ferrari and Porsche a hard time. The 343 horsepower S54B32 engine was more powerful and more rabid than the M3 E36. The car was produced until 2006. From 2003 to 2004, however, BMW offered an even sportier version, the M3 CSL, produced in 1383 units.
