Less ambitious than the DS that it ended up replacing, the CX was nonetheless an innovative car on several fronts. Towards the end of its career, the CX was also offered in a series of sports versions, starting with the 1984 CX25 GTI and 1985 CX25 GTI Turbo, with 2500cc engine and 168hp. The GTI and the GTI Turbo continue to be added to the second series: the GTI from 1986 to 1989, the GTI Turbo only to 1986. From 1987 to 1989 the 25 GTI Turbo 2 was produced.
