1985 was a transition year for Mazda in endurance racing. The BGF team, which had raced the previous year with Mazda-powered Lola T616s, upgraded to the top class IMSA GTP with Porsche 962s, while the Mazdaspeed factory team set up a development of the Group C2 727C, called the 737C. The annual Le Mans event ended with both cars at the finish line, in 19th and 24th place overall, third and sixth in Group C2.
