Having overcome the economic problems of 1976, the Ensign team was able to concentrate on developing a new car, the N177, managing to field two units per race during 1977. The car was well designed and was also a good investment for some private teams, like Theodore. In 1977, Ensign managed to score 10 points in the championship, something that had never happened before. The N177 also raced in 1978. Chassis number 06 was converted into a wing car and used as a spare car for 1979. The N177 was driven by Derek Daly, Harald Ertl, Jacky Ickx, Geoff Lees, Lamberto Leoni, Brett Lunger, Danny Ongais, Nelson Piquet, Clay Regazzoni and Patrick Tambay.
