The first Ensign Formula 1 car debuted in 1973, designed by Mo Nunn. It had rather original aerodynamics even if the mechanics remained the ones used by most of the teams: Ford Cosworth DFV engine and Hewland FGA400 gearbox. A second car, more conventional in shape, was prepared and the team continued with these two chassis until 1974-75; in 1974 the N174 (MN02) made its debut, allowing Chris Amon to finish eighth in Long Beach. The N174 was used until 1976.
