The BT7 was essentially a development of the 1962 BT3. The Coventry Climax V8 engine with 5-speed Hewland gearbox was fitted to the BT7. During 1963 Jack Brabham's team achieved good results, eventually finishing in third place among the constructors; in 1964 the two existing frames of the BT7 were modified, mainly in function of the new wider Dunlop tires. During the year Brabham won the International Trophy and Gurney the French GP. At the end of the season one of the BT7s was sold to Rob Walker who entrusted it to Jo Bonnier, continuing to use it in 1965 and in 1966. Denny Hulme and Giancarlo Baghetti also occasionally drove the BT7.
