After the first experience with sportscars with the 1963 M63, Alpine developed a new car for 1964, the M64, equipped with a completely different chassis, moving to a more rigid and much lighter multitubular structure. Marcel Huber conceived a very effective aerodynamically body, while Gordini prepared two engines, one of 1001cc, the other of 1149cc for the new technical regulations. That year, at Le Mans, the Alpines took the top two places in the energy performance ranking, also breaking every record in the class up to 1600cc.
