In 1987 Peugeot Sport with its sports director Jean Todt launched a program for the Paris-Dakar, to continue an activity with the 205 Turbo 16s that the ban on the Group B regulations at the end of 1986 had interrupted. In 1988, the new 405 T16 Grand Raid debuted, which was basically the 205 T16 with updated bodywork. Vatanen won the raid in 1989 and 1990 with the 405 T16; in 1991, the PSA group changed the bodywork again, this time adopting the appearance of the Citroen ZX, which dominated the scene of the raids until 1997.
