Sportscar endurance version derived from the W196 of Formula 1, the Mercedes 300SLR was designed to be entered in the 1955 racing season. The 8-cylinder engine was similar to that of the W196, but increased to 3 liters - and with desmodromic valve control and double camshaft. The weight of the car was 830 kg. The 300SLR won important races, such as the Mille Miglia (Moss / Jenkinson), the Targa Florio (Moss / Collins) and the Tourist Trophy (Moss / Fitch), but was involved in the infamous Le Mans accident, which cost the life of Pierre Levegh and numerous spectators. At the end of 1956, Mercedes withdrew from racing.
