The McLaren M4A was a single-seater with a very simple concept, designed by Robin Herd first for Formula 2 in 1967, then also for Formula 3 (produced in this case by Trojan). The engine of the F.2 version was a Cosworth FVA mated to a Hewland FT200 gearbox. Between 1967 and 1968 the M4A F.2 achieved some good placings, especially in 1968 when the official team was represented by the Checkered Flag team. In 1967 a chassis was also converted for F1, with a 2.1-liter BRM V12 engine (McLaren M4B): he achieved fourth place in Monaco with Bruce McLaren as best place, before being scrapped after an accident in Holland.
