For the 1991 Formula 1 season Brabham, which came under the control of Middlebridge, secured Yamaha engines and started the season with an intermediate car, the BT59Y. The new BT60Y was ready for the San Marino GP. The season was anything but easy for Mark Blundell and Martin Brundle, but the team managed to score three precious points: Brundle was fifth in Japan while Blundell was sixth in Belgium. Brabham finished ninth in the constructors' championship, level on points with Lotus.
