The Ferrari 126 C4, introduced in early 1984, was an evolution of the 126 C3 that had made its debut in the middle of the previous season. More slender in shape, with a general refinement of the lines, the shell made of composite materials was practically the same, formed by two shells (one lower and the other upper). The bonnet was very low and integrated two NACA air intakes for cooling, while the "camel hump" on the 1983 car had been eliminated. The rear wing, used for the first time by Ferrari on the 126 C2, were copied from many other teams, Brabham, Lotus, McLaren, Renault and Williams in the lead. With this car Michele Alboreto obtained pole and victory for Zolder (the first won for him at the wheel of a Ferrari), thus honoring the memory of Gilles Villeneuve who had lost his life two years earlier on the same circuit. During that season the Milanese driver finished amongst the first three for three more times. There were also four podiums by his teammate René Arnoux.
