The Lotus 21 was an intermediate car, derived from the Formula Junior 20 and used while waiting for the new 1500cc V8 engine to be ready. On the 21 was mounted the usual FPF with the ZF gearbox, more robust than that of the 20. The suspensions and brakes were also revised. The debut took place at the Monaco GP in 1961 but for the Lotus team the best came at the end of the season, with Innes Ireland's first F1 victory at Watkins Glen. Ireland also won two other untitled GPs and at the end of the season 21 was retired. But first, Clark and Taylor had some races in South Africa. In the following years some private teams such as Brabham, Filipinetti and Walker used the Lotus 21.
