Between the end of 1958 and 1959 Ferrari experienced a profound crisis, also suffering the loss of the 1958 world champion Mike Hawthorn, who died in a car accident, of Luigi Musso and Peter Collins. New drivers arrived in Maranello: Tony Brooks, Cliff Allison, Jean Behra and Dan Gurney. This renewal of pilots did not correspond to an adequate change of means. The 1958 world champion 246 single-seater was simply updated, giving life to the 256, which did not match up to the best English teams such as Cooper, Lotus and BRM. The only victories in the two-year period 1959-1960 came in France and Germany in 1959 with Brooks and in Monza in 1960 with Phil Hill.
