In the early nineties Ercole Spada returned to Zagato. Spada was the one who in the sixties had designed most of the Zagato bodyworks, signing some great masterpieces such as the Aston Martin DB4/GT or the Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ. Spada then worked with Ford, BMW and the Italian studio IDEA, designing dozens of successful cars such as the BMW 7 Series E32 or the Fiat Tipo. Presented at the 1993 Geneva Motor Show, the FZ93 was a study based on the Ferrari 512TR and Zagato wanted it to be sold in a limited production run. For the design of the FZ93, Spada said he was inspired by Formula 1 cars, the lines of which could be found in certain stylistic features, such as the bonnet which actually recalled the nose of a racing single-seater, or the front bumper. The rear hood took the form of an immense inverted NACA air intake. The interiors were completely revised, with a very thorough search for detail that was functional and original at the same time. On an aesthetic level, the first version was also characterized by the red-carbon finish and racing stickers. However, the FZ93 did not enjoy great success, and the following year the car was revamped with an all-red bodywork and renamed ES1. In fact, the car had always appeared at least a decade behind contemporary trends but some elements actually contributed to influencing certain creations of the early 2000s: the bonnet probably influenced that of the Ferrari Enzo, but also of the Mercedes-McLaren SLR or the Mercedes SLK R171, while the aluminum plates on the dashboard are found on the Ferrari 360 Modena.
