At the 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans, Aston Martin brought three apparently identical cars: but if the DP215 was registered in the prototype category, the two DP214s had chassis numbers of the DB4 GT (0194 / R and 0195 / R) and were allowed in Gran Turismo. The two cars had to retire, and the 0194 / R was entered again in the 24 Hours of Le Mans the following year. These special “DPs” were used by Aston Martin as test cars, to be used in high-level competitions. The series began in 1962, with the DP212 entering the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
At the 1964 Daytona 2000km the DP214/0194R car, driven by Roy Salvadori and Mike Salmon, was forced to retire at the start of the race.
