The Alfasud was intended to be a sporty but compact car, capable of effectively facing European competition. The assembly line was installed in Pomigliano d'Arco (Naples); hence the name Alfasud. The car had a long career. With 2 and 4-door bodies, the Alfasud was manufactured in three series', from 1972 to 1984. The engines were varied, from the smallest 1186cc to 1490cc, passing through the intermediate displacements of 1286 and 1351cc. The Alfasud was immediately appreciated for its dynamic qualities and brilliant performance, even if the construction and assembly quality was not always up to the expectations. The Giardinetta (Break) was also introduced into the range, with 1186cc (from 1975 to 1977), 1286cc (in 1978) and 1351cc (in 1979) engines. The more sporty 2-door versions, the 1.2, 1.3 and 1.5-liter TI, were highly appreciated, then culminating in the last one, the Quadrifoglio Verde of 1983-84. The Alfasud was replaced by the Alfa 33, which partially took up its philosophy and its position on the market.
