The TR7 was characterized by a wedge shape. The line was designed by Harris Mann, who also designed the similar Leyland Princess. The TR7 had installed a four-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 1,998 cm³ and single shaft distribution which delivered 105 HP (92 HP in the United States). This engine, which was equipped with two valves per cylinder, derived from the one installed on the Triumph Dolomite and was mounted at the front. The traction was rear and the gearbox was a four-speed manual (the fifth gear was however optional) or a three-speed automatic. The suspension was coil springs. Anti-roll bars were installed both at the front and at the rear. The front brakes were discs, while the rear ones were drums. There was the intention of using the 16-valve engine of the Dolomite Sprint on the TR7, but the idea was not followed up. The TR7 was offered with a two-door coupé bodywork. At the beginning of 1979 the roadster version was introduced.
