A year after the release of the Peugeot 205 GTi, Renault unveiled a GTi destined to rival Sochaux's car, the Supercinq GT Turbo. It took up some mechanical parts of the 11 Turbo, with a 115 horsepower turbo engine. The low weight (830 kg) allowed remarkable performance. The car had a restyling in 1987 and a special version dedicated to driver Alain Oreille, limited to 2000 pieces. The GT Turbo went out of production in 1991, and also had a brilliant career in racing. It was also used in the various single-make championships organized by Renault, as was the case for its ancestor 5 Alpine and 5 Alpine Turbo.
