Ferrari had already dominated the European hillclimb championship in 1962 and 1965, in both cases with Scarfiotti. For the 1969 edition, the Maranello-based company designed a specific car, the 212E, equipped with a 1990cc V12 boxer with a power of about 290 horsepower. The car was entrusted to the Swiss driver and test driver Peter Schetty, who dominated the season, handing Ferrari the European title with great authority. Schetty, who came from Abarth, was a profound connoisseur of the race courses of the European hillclimb championship. Subsequently the car was sold to the private driver Lualdi-Gabardi, who used it in various hill climbs after having modified it. Some Dino 206S were also equipped with bodywork similar to the 212E.
